Use less tin foil when making barbecue food

Apr 22, 2022

Many people like to eat barbecue, but the tin foil used for barbecue may affect their health, which most people don't know. Recently, the International Food Packaging Association released the 2013 China food packaging safety consumption warning, involving 12 items such as stainless steel barbecue net, straw, bottle cap and bottle body, stainless steel products and paper tableware. Among them, improper use of aluminum foil and tin foil during barbecue will endanger health, which is particularly noteworthy.

Tin foil paper and aluminum foil paper are mostly used to wrap food materials for barbecue to prevent meat from scorching. According to experts, the main component of tin foil is lead tin alloy. The content of lead in tin foil is as high as 50%. Toxic lead white and lead hydroxide can be generated on the surface. Yellow lead (lead oxide) generated during incineration is also a toxic compound. These toxic particles float in the air with the hot air flow, are inhaled into the respiratory tract by the surrounding people and deposited in the lungs. They are prone to chronic lead poisoning, which will cause depression, anemia, kidney disease, infertility, abortion and other symptoms.

During the use of tin foil paper and aluminum foil paper, if seasoning sauce or lemon is added to the food materials, the tin and aluminum will be separated out due to the acidic substances. Once mixed into the food and absorbed by the human body, it may cause tin and aluminum poisoning. Tin will stimulate the intestines and stomach, aluminum will lead to Alzheimer's disease, and kidney patients will have anemia if they eat too much aluminum.

The national standard refined aluminum foil (gb10570-1989) stipulates that the toxic elements in the refined aluminum foil used for food packaging shall comply with the following provisions: lead: no more than 0.01%, cadmium: no more than 0.01%, arsenic: no more than 0.01%. Therefore, the best choice for barbecue is aluminum foil paper, and its lead content should meet the provisions of national standards.

In daily life, aluminum foil and tin foil are easy to distinguish. Tin foil is much brighter than aluminum foil, but it has poor ductility and breaks when pulled. Supermarket sales are usually stacked one by one, with cotton paper between each, which is difficult to cut and expensive. Aluminum foil material is relatively rigid and easy to cut. It is mostly packaged in drum type, and the price is also cheaper.

Experts advise people not to add sauce or lemon if they want to wrap the ingredients in tin foil or aluminum foil when making baked goods. In addition, cabbage leaves and corn leaves can be used instead of tin foil paper or aluminum foil paper, or barbecue mesh can be used as the bottom, which is not only pollution-free, healthy to eat, but also delicious.
